School Work And Life End In Death

A useful life spent in the service of youth ended last Thursday morning with the sudden death of Miss E. Louise Smythe, principal of the B street school. She was found dead in bed, having passed away some time after midnight.

Miss Caroline Smythe, sister of the deceased, and teacher in the Polytechnic high school of Los Angeles, was visiting Miss Smythe at the time of the sad event.

Miss Smythe had taught in the local schools for more than 20 years. Her connection with other schools in Marin and Sonoma counties dated back 35 years. She was regarded as one of the most efficient elementary teachers in California. She was the author of several primary instruction books which are used throughout the state. She declined an appointment two years ago as supervisor of primary work in the Chico State Normal school, preferring to remain here.

The funeral was held Saturday at Santa Rosa, the home of her brother. A number of San Rafael teachers attended the services, which were conducted by Rev. Lynn T. White of the Presbyterian church in this city. A memorial service was held in the church here for the departed woman Sunday afternoon which was largely attended by friends, associates, pupils and former pupils.
