Community Shocked By Sudden Death

A genuine shock to this community came this morning with the announcement of the sudden death of Henry Crockett, for the past seven or eight years proprietor of Crockett’s Express.

Taken suddenly ill yesterday, the deceased, for the first time in many years, remained at home and left his business for half a day to his employees. It is reported that he rose this morning and expressed the intention of getting back to work.

Too ill, however, to carry out his plans, he returned to the house, and in half an hour the end came. From the meager details learned, it is gathered that he was seized with pains in the abdomen yesterday, and it is supposed that death was due to acute indigestion.

The deceased was among the most respected businessmen of the community. Previous to his engaging in the express business, he had worked as a lineman.

He was but 43 years of age, and had just reached the period of life and success when he had begun to feel that he could rest occasionally from work that had taken many of the hours of every day.

He is survived by a widow, Mrs. Dora Crockett, and a step son, Marshall Keyse, who is now with Company “D” at Camp Kearny.

The deceased was born in San Rafael and had spent his whole life here. He was a member of the local lodges of the Odd Fellows, the Eagles, the Woodmen and the Red Men.

The funeral, under the direction of Dr. F. E. Sawyer, will be held Saturday at 2 o’clock, with services by the Odd Fellows, at Odd Fellows Hall, and burial will be made in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
