Paid Death Notice

BERGIN, Laurine Kuhn - Died March 27, 2000, at age 92 in Greenbrae of Alzheimer's disease. Born in Oakland, she lived all her life in the Bay Area and was educated at U.C. Berkeley where she earned her bachelor's and master's degrees. She taught Physical Education at Miss Burke's in San Francisco and was on the "pioneer" faculty of S.F.J.C. (later City College of San Francisco) from its inception in 1935 until her retirement in 1969, teaching P.E. and serving as department chairman for most of those years.

She married Hans Bergin, a native of Sweden, in 1937; they lived many years in Marin County, were Sierra Club members and avid wilderness hikers. After his death in 1968 she continued to live in their Kent Woodlands home, enjoying her friends, taking art and literature classes at College of Marin and traveling.

She moved to The Tamalpais in Greenbrae in 1985 and was very active there until about six years ago when her health began to deteriorate. She was a fine teacher, professional and fair in her dealings with staff and students; a great cook and gracious hostess, a wise, warm and friendly woman who had over her many years, a positive influence on thousands of young people and on her colleagues and friends. At her request there are no services; her ashes will be scattered at sea joining those of her beloved husband Hans. Memorial donations may be made to City College of San Francisco, Foundation, 50 Phelan Ave., San Francisco, Calif. 94112, Friends of the Marin County Library or charity of your choice.
