SISTER SERENA

Sister Serena McCarthy, O.P., former longtime bursar general of the Dominican convent in San Rafael, died Sunday in the convent’s infirmary. She was 93.

Born in Kentucky, she entered the order about 1916, after having taught elementary school in Vallejo. In 1918, she became a secretary for Dominican’s mother general. She became bursar general in 1924.

During her years at the convent, she also helped the girls in Dominican’s high school stage plays and operettas, and was a key figure in the staging of the formerly traditional seniors’ circus on campus.

She retired in 1955, and entered the Our Lady of Lourdes Infirmary at Dominican in 1974.

She leaves no close relatives, but many nieces and nephews, including Sister Richard, a member of the Dominican convent.

The funeral will be private, followed by burial in St. Dominic’s Cemetery, Benicia.

Memorial contributions are preferred to Our Lady of Lourdes Infirmary, 1520 Grand Ave., San Rafael, 94901.
