Last Sad Rites For Wm. Babcock
In a holographic will containing less that 100 words, William Babcock, who passed away Wednesday of last week at the Hotel Coronado, bequeathed his entire fortune to his wife, Julia May Babcock. She is named as executrix without bonds.
The value of the holdings of Mr. Babcock, which is variously estimated at from one to five million dollars, was not mentioned either in the will or the petition for letters testamentary, except to give it as “upwards of $10,000.”
The funeral, held last Saturday, was one of the largest that ever took place in San Rafael. It was attended by men and women from all walks of life, attesting to the universal regard in which the deceased was held.
The ceremony was held at St. Paul’s Episcopal church, of which Mr. Babcock was a member, and the services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. G. M. Cutting, and Bishop Nichols.
Burial was made in Mt. Tamalpais cemetery.
Among the honorary pall bearers were men with whom the deceased had been closely associated in business and social circles. They were Messrs. Abbott, Eyre, Page, Scott, Donohue, Menzies, Anderson, Berg, Gray, Pomeroy, Berry and Ashe.
The active pall bearers were taken from the retinue of the Babcock household.
