LAWRENCE HAYNES

At his request, there will be no funeral service for Lawrence Haynes of Tiburon, superintendent of the Tiburon Sanitary District since 1968.

He died at home Friday of an apparent heart attack.

He was 51.

A native of Shacklefords, Va., Haynes entered the Air Force after graduating from high school. He served in the military for 21 years in Vietnam, Thailand, Turkey, Iceland and Guam. He also was stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base.

He served in the reserves between 1968 and 1978.

Haynes had lived in Tiburon since 1976. Before that he had lived in Mill Valley since 1954.

He began working for Sanitary District No. 5, which serves the southern Tiburon peninsula, in 1968. He ran the treatment plant and was the district’s only executive. He served as public relations officer, business manager, personnel manager and finance officer.

When he died he was working with engineers on a $3 million improvement project to the treatment plant on Raccoon Strait. James Murray, board chairman, praised the Haynes’ management of t he sanitary district. Murray pointed out that the district was able to build the new treatment plant without a bond election and that it has been able to cut maintenance costs.

Haynes is survived by his wife, Lorena Haynes of Tiburon, and a sister, Joan Recor of Virginia.

He will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered at sea.
