Sudden Death of JACK VERDENAL

Smiling, happy JACK VERDENAL is no more. Only the memory of his handsome joyous face, his kind heart and fine character remain to those who knew and loved him. The sad news came from Tucson last Monday morning. It was entirely unexpected as his physical condition had so improved that he was about to return and take the position waiting for him in the office of E.S. Pillsbury, the well known San Francisco attorney.

Some months ago he had gone to Tucson to escape the rigors of a winter on the coast. He was young and his rapid growth had sapped at his strength and left him physically weak. An outdoor life for a few months was decided upon and he made the trip south. Last Saturday he was taking a drive some 3 miles from Tucson when his horse ran away and he was compelled to walk back. Before he reached home a storm set in and he got wet. He was taken down with pneumonia and almost before the seriousness of his illness was realized he was dead. He had just written home that he was 12 pounds heavier and never felt better.

Word was sent from this city and the body is now on its way here where the funeral will take place.

For years Jack, despite the fact that he was a mere boy, was confidential clerk to W.W. Leake when the latter was managing editor of the San Francisco Call. When Mr. Leake severed his connection with the paper, Jack was appointed the Call's correspondent for this county. In this position, despite his youth, he rendered efficient and faithful service to his paper and made a host of friends among strangers.

His father, J.M. Verdenal, who is one of the few remaining pioneer attorneys of San Francisco, resides in this city with his family. Mrs. Thomas P. Boyd, wife of our District Attorney, is a sister of the deceased, and D.F. Verdenal, the well known New York correspondent is an uncle.

Deceased was born in San Francisco in 1884, and prior to his family moving here had spent his life there.
