Hepburn Wilkins Dies In Battle
The sad news came this week of the death in France of James H. Wilkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Wilkins.
Despite what hope might be gained by the fact that a letter written by their boy and dated about the time of his reported death has reached them, the sorrowing parents are convinced that the official report can be relied upon. The letter, they believe, was written before the boy went into the fight which resulted in his fatal injury, but mailed by the authorities the day following his death. This would account for the date of the postmark.
The boy was well known here, where he has spent his life. But 19 years of age when he enlisted, he had seen many months’ service at the front. Many interesting and well written letters have been received from him and printed in the local and San Francisco papers.
The City Council Monday night passed a resolution decreeing that the flag should be flown at halfmast. James Wilkins, the boy’s father, is the City Engineer of San Rafael.
