Loris R. Larsen
Minden, Nevada resident, Loris R. Larsen, 81, died on June 17, 2010 in Carson City, Nevada. He was born September 27, 1928 in San Rafael, California to Leonard and Melba Larsen and was raised in San Diego, California. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1948 to 1951. After his military service, Loris completed his degree in Civil Engineering at San Diego State University in 1956.
Loris was a licensed Civil and Structural Engineer in California, Nevada, and Oregon. He practiced Structural Engineering in the San Diego area after college until he moved to Reno, Nevada in 1989. He continued to practice in Northern Nevada until his retirement in 2002.
Loris was a pioneer in earthquake-resistant design of buildings. He served on code committees and professional associations that developed our modern building codes. He was Structural Engineer in Charge for many prominent buildings, including hospitals, university buildings, judicial facilities, public schools, and high-rise office buildings. During his half-century career, Loris mentored many young engineers who are now leaders of prominent engineering firms.
Loris is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Patti; son David Larsen; daughter Lori Lins; stepsons Darren Zeno, Derrick Zeno, Dana Zeno and Dorian Zeno; stepdaughter Debra Gagnon; 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
