Adam Marshall, a resident of this county for the past fifty years, passed away at his home here on Sunday from gangrene. His death, while sudden to many, was not unexpected by his relatives as he has been in poor health for some time. Two years ago, lacking one day, his wife passed away and he then said he would follow within two years and now they are resting side by side in Fernwood cemetery.
Funeral services were held Thursday, a large number of his many friends attending the church services and following the remains to their last resting place. A requiem mass for the repose of his soul was celebrated in Star of the Sea church.
Mr. Marshall was a native of the Azore Islands, aged 73 years and eight months. Fifty years ago he left a ship here and went to work as cook in a brickyard near where the Reed District School is. In 1874 he built and operated the boarding house known as the Lisbon House until his retirement several years ago.
He was the father of Charles Marshall, captain of the U. S. launch Alcatraz and a resident of Alcatraz Island for several years and Adam (Dick) Marshall, Jr., a letter carrier on the southside route for the past few years, and the late Mrs. Caroline Soares. He was a charter member of the local Holy Ghost Society, of the I.D.E.S. No. 49 and of Court Sausalito No. 150, Foresters of America. He was the owner of the Eagles hall building and other property in Sausalito and elsewhere.
The deceased was highly esteemed by all his acquaintances and was of a kindly nature.
The pall bearers were C. H. Becker, Jacob Kling, M. T. Ygnacio, Joe Roberto, Manuel Mansebo and Manuel Furtado.
