Robert A. Symes, 84, Succumbs

Robert Arthur Symes of Sausalito, who arrived in California 65 years ago as a crewman on a sailing ship, died unexpectedly at his home early today. He was 84.

Symes’ body was found by his landlady, Mrs. Edith Johnson, after she noticed his lights and radio were on later than usual. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Asst. Coroner William C. Bradley ordered an autopsy.

Symes’ adventurous life included campaigning in the Boer War with the Canadian Army, participation in the United States labor movement and gold mining in the Yukon.

A native of Weymouth, England, he went to the West Indies at an early age. His father was captain of a sailing ship there.

Symes grew up in the West Indies, living and working on ships.

His mining adventures began soon after the war. He arrived at the Yukon goldfields near the end of the big rush. He later mined copper and was a member of the Western Federation of Miners and of the Industrial Workers of the World (the Wob……illegible line)

In more recent years, Symes became a dental technician, married and settled down at Marysville. He and his wife later divorced. She died several years ago.

He moved to Marin 15 years ago. He lived at 104 Second Street, Sausalito.

He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Jean Chamberlain of Sausalito, and three granddaughters.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Frank J. Keaton Mortuary, Sausalito. Burial will be in Mount Tamalpais Cemetery.
