Boy Loses Life in Reservoir

Little Chester Hoen, ten-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. David H. Hoen, was drowned last Saturday in what is known as the Foge Reservoir not far from the Hoen residence.

The accident occurred while Chester and his brother were watching their father’s cattle near the reservoir. Rushing to his home, the brother told his mother that Chester had fallen into the pond. Distracted over the tragedy, Mrs. Hoen telephoned to Sheriff Keating’s office and word was soon received by the father. A number of men rushed to the place and began a search for the boy, but it was two hours before the body was recovered. Coroner J. Ray Keaton and Deputy Coroner Sorensen, not entirely without hope that there was a chance to save the boy’s life, rushed the little fellow to the Emergency Hospital. A. W. Sisson secured a pulmotor from the Northwestern Pacific headquarters in Sausalito, and heroic efforts were resorted to in an effort to revive the spark of life. The labor was futile.

The funeral services wee held Monday afternoon in the F. E. Sawyer Company’s parlors, with Rev. Father Carroll officiating. An impressive touch was given to the ceremony by the visit of many of the little boy’s classmates at St. Raphael ‘s school. In little groups they knelt in reverence by the side of the casket which shrouded the form of their companion of a few days before and then walked sorrowfully away.

The burial was made Tuesday in Oakland, a few of the close friends of the family accompanying the remains to the last resting place. Besides his parents, D. H. Hoen and Mrs. Helen Hoen, Chester is survived by his brothers and sisters, Minerva, Jessie, Richard, Robert, Philip and Billy Hoen.
