Tomales Youth Drowns At Beach
The death by drowning last Friday of John Mitchell, a popular University of California student and son of Mr. and Mrs. William Mitchell, of Tomales, cast a cloud of sadness over the northern part of Marin.
The tragedy occurred at Dillon’s Beach, where the young man, home from Berkeley on a vacation, was attending a picnic. He had just entered the water when he was caught by the undertow. Fellow picnickers stood on the beach unable to render assistance. A diligent search for the body by grief stricken friends and relatives has so far been futile.
Mitchell was 19 years of age and had gained an enviable reputation as an athlete.
