ALBERT E. THEBERGE
A memorial mass for Capt. Albert E. Theberge of Corte Madera, a Marin resident for 16 years and a longtime merchant sea captain, will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church in Larkspur.
Theberge died unexpectedly July 16 aboard his ship, the S.S. President Kennedy, while moored in the port of Kaohshiung, Taiwan. He was 63.
Theberge was born in New York City and went to sea as a teen-ager. He joined the Navy in 1933.
He joined the Merchant Marine after his stint in the Navy and served on merchant ships during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
He was mate and chief mate before becoming a captain in 1967. He had worked for the President lines out of Oakland since 1963.
Theberge moved to Corte Madera in 1964 with his wife, Catherine. He was a member of the Master Mates and Pilots of San Francisco, Local 90. He sailed Pacific routes from Oakland to Japan and China and back.
He is survived by four sons, Navy Lt. Cmdr. A. E. Theberge Jr. of Boulder, Col., Midshipman Marc Theberge of the U.S.Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., John Theberge and James Theberge, both of Corte Madera; a brother, August Theberge of Northport, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
Burial will be at sea.
The family prefers memorial contributions to the Apostleship of the Sea in San Francisco.
