MARGUERITE BERNARD

Marguerite Bernard, a former Spanish, French and drama teacher at Katharine Branson School in Ross, died Wednesday in a local convalescent hospital. She was 85.

A native of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., Miss Bernard taught at the private girl’s school from 1938 to 1964 when she retired. She lived in San Anselmo during that period.

Particularly active in the school’s drama department, she led the Phantasticks there and directed a major play every year.

The students were very loyal to her and some of them came back to visit her 15 years after they graduated.

She graduated from Misses Masters’ School in New York and then attended Barnard College and Teachers College in New York.

She then taught at the Professional Children’s School in New York City and did professional stage work there.

Miss Bernard also went to Paris where she studied French theater methods. She worked with members of Lucien Bonhuer’s Company while in France.

She then worked at the Halsted School in Yonkers, N.Y.

She is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Jeanett Stallman of New York and Yvonne Bradley of Portland, Maine.

No funeral will be held.
