Dr. MATTHEW N. HOSMER

Dr. Matthew N. Hosmer of Greenbrae, a Marin resident for 27 years and a practicing physician in San Francisco for 50 years, died Wednesday in a San Francisco hospital. He was 84.

Hosmer was raised in Turlock. He attended the University of California at Berkeley before earning his medical degree in 1924 from the University of California School of Medicine in San Francisco.

He lived in San Francisco for about 28 years before moving to Marin about 1953.

He practiced medicine at the Franklin Hospital in San Francisco, now known as the Ralph K. Davies Medical Center, for 50 years. He was an ear, nose and throat specialist.

His daughter, Barbara Hosmer of Greenbrae, is a former editor and reporter for the Independent Journal.

Besides his daughter, he is survived by his wife, Lillian R. Hosmer of Greenbrae; a son, Robert E. Hosmer of San Rafael; and a sister, Carol Watson of Concord.

He served in the Navy Medical Corps during World War II. He was the past head of the nose and throat section of the medical school at the University of California at San Francisco.

He was a member and past president of the San Francisco Medical Society, the California and American medical associations and a; member and past commander of the Marin Yacht Club. He was a past member of the San Francisco Yacht Club and the Family Club.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Monte’s Mission Chapel mortuary in San Rafael. Burial will be at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from noon to 8 p.m. The family prefers memorial gifts to Matthew N. Hosmer Medical Fund, Ralph K. Davies Medical Center, Castro and Duboce streets, San Francisco.
