Julia May Babcock Of San Rafael Dies At 93
Julia May Babcock of San Rafael, 93, active in civic work and San Rafael society for about a half century, died quietly yesterday at her home after along illness. She was the widow of William Babcock, once president of the Security Savings Bank and active in Bay Area shipping circles, who died in 1918.
The Babcocks first came to San Rafael about the turn of the century and lived at “Edgehill,” now a part of the Dominican Convent in San Rafael. When Babcock died, Mrs. Babcock sold the home and a large tract to Dominican and moved to Culloden Park, where she had lived ever since.
Mrs. Babcock was one of the first organizers of San Rafael Improvement Club and was interested in planting trees along the roads of San Rafael, according to a close companion who prefers that her name not be used. A native of Baltimore, Mrs. Babcock had been fond of trees and greenery.
Mrs. Babcock was active in Catholic Ladies Aid and Catholic Social Service. She donated a building at St. Vincent’s School For Boys in memory of her late husband.
She had been bedridden for the past six years.
She leaves a sister in England, Lady Bagot, whom she visited in her frequent European trips. She was also the aunt of Mrs. Harold Ebright of Novato, Mrs. Harry Brown and Mrs. Harold McKinnon of San Francisco, Mrs. Harry Black of New York, Mrs. William Von Rath of Long Island, Henry de C. May of France and Mrs. Clarence Kempff of Coronado.
Funeral services will be held at 9:15 a.m. tomorrow from her late residence in Culloden Park, thence to St. Raphael’s Church in San Rafael for Requiem High Mass. Rosary services will be recited at 8 tonight at her late residence.
