Mrs. Mary Martin Over 102 Yrs of Age, Summoned

Believed to have been the oldest woman in California, Mrs. Mary Martin of Mill Valley, died there last Friday, December 20, at the home of her son, Manuel Martin.

Relatives of the deceased said that the aged woman had passed her 102nd year by one month and 27 days, when Death beckoned. For the past 12 years Mrs. Martin had been living with her son, who is 83 years of age.

Mrs. Martin was born October 22, 1838 in the Azores Islands and came to the United States when 23 years of age. During the first years of the civil War, Mrs. Martin came west, with many other emigrants of that period.

Her husband, Manuel Martin, passed away many years ago. He was a sea faring man, a mate on ocean going sailing ships.

Two other sons and daughters survive their aged parents. They are Enos Martin, Mill Valley; Joseph Martin, Los Angeles; Mrs. Mary Rubulio and Mrs. Etta Lemos, of San Francisco.

The remains were taken to San Francisco Friday morning, where funeral service was held followed by interment in Mission San Jose Cemetery.
