William Lando Dead
He Was One of the San Francisco Vigilantes in Pioneer Days of California

A Stockton paper contains the following:
Archie William Lando, one of the early settlers of California died recently at the home of his sister, Mrs. G. C. Hyatt, where he had lived for the past 6 years. For some time he has been feeble, as a result of weakness of the heart, and, when he was attacked by pneumonia about a week ago, his strength failed rapidly. Dr. C. L. Six attended him and Dr. F. P. Clark, as a friend of the family, saw him frequently, and all that was possible was done for his comfort. Sunday afternoon, Mrs. Hyatt noticed that her bother seemed to have difficulty in breathing and she called ex-Councilman Coates, who lives near. They assisted Mr. Lando into a large easy chair, and while sitting there he expired with scarcely a struggle.

Mr. Lando was a native of New York and was nearly 79 years old. He came to California around Cape Horn in 1852, bringing a thoroughbred horse for Mr. Shattuck of Alameda County, in whose employ he worked for several years. After several years’ residence in Oakland, he went to Marin County, where for a long time he was well known as a veterinary surgeon. Six years ago last November, on account of his failing health, he came to live with his sister here. Several weeks ago another sister, Mrs. G. A. Kelsey, came from Connecticut for an extended visit, and she will remain with Mrs. Hyatt for some time. Another sister, Mrs. Hattie Richards, lives in New York, and a brother, G. H. Lando, in Colorado.

Mr. Lando was a member of the Vigilance Committee organized in the 50’s to establish order in San Francisco and he took an active part in the measures for making life and property safe at that time. He was associated with many prominent men of the early history of California and could give interesting reminiscences of the pioneer days.
