JAMES E. TOWNSEND
James E. Townsend of San Rafael, a Marin resident for almost 50 years and a commercial real estate broker, died Monday at a local hospital. He was 91.
Townsend was a native of El Paso, Texas. He was raised there and graduated in 1906 from the University of Chicago. His father was a state Supreme Court judge sitting in El Paso.
He worked in Mexico for several years representing a beef packing firm and then moved to California. He has lived in Marin since 1934.
He was a broker in commercial real estate in Marin before his retirement. He was married in 1923. His wife, Margaret, died a few years ago.
He is survived by two sons, James Townsend Jr. of Moraga and Charles Townsend of Bakersfield.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church of San Anselmo.
The family prefers memorial donations to the American Cancer Society.
