W. S. Manon Drowned in Richardson Bay

Walter S. Manon, a native of San Francisco, aged 40 years, was drowned in Richardson Bay on Sunday while he was out duck hunting with a friend by the name of Plowden, also of San Francisco.

The two men had gone out on the bay for a hunt. The water was rough and the wind blowing hard. When they were out some distance, one oar lock broke and the oar went overboard. The boat drifted about for a while, and then filled with water. Plowden managed to stay with the boat and finally, when he was about all in landed on the shore. Manon did not fare so well. He tried to swim to shore, but was hampered by his heavy boots, which pulled him under the water.

R. and T. Freese, two young men who live near Reed’s station found the remains of Manon on the beach where it was washed up by the incoming tide. Plowden, when he reached shore, was taken to the home of John Reed, where he was given restoratives and dry clothes. He will suffer no ill effects from his terrible experience. The remains of Manon were taken to San Francisco where they will be interred.

Coroner F. W. Sawyer was notified as soon as the remains were found, and brought the drowned man to this city. The inquest will probably not be held until the end of the week, as the witnesses cannot get here until that time.
