BETTY KLEIN
Betty “Chris” Klein, 60, of Forest Knolls, a former English teacher at Tamalpais High School, died Monday at her home after a long illness.
Mrs. Klein, who retired in 1978 after operating a bookstore at South Lake Tahoe for four years, had been a teacher at Tamalpais High School in the mid-1960s.
She had been a resident of Marin for 33 years and served as a vice president of the League of Women Voters of Central Marin and as chairman of the Marin County Council of the League of Women Voters.
She was a native of Columbus, Ohio. She had also served in the Coast Guard during World War II.
Mrs. Klein graduated from Mills College, Oakland, and held a master’s degree from Syracuse University in New York state.
Before moving to Marin she had taught at Anna Head School in Berkeley and at Miss Burke’s in San Francisco.
She was chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Tamalpais Union High School District tax election in 1958, and Mrs. Klein also had worked on the bond issue for Redwood High School and other school campaigns and was active in environmental groups.
Surviving are a son, Richard Klein of Sausalito; two daughters, Betsy Klein of New York City and Leslie Klein of Ignacio; and a brother, Robert Whitehead of Arizona.
There will be no services. The family prefers that memorial contributions be made to Mills College, Oakland, or Children’s Hospital in San Francisco.
