MARK J. ARCHBOLD Sr.

Mark J. Archbold Sr. of Terra Linda, a retired engineer from the San Francisco Fire Department, died Friday. He was 98.

Archbold was born and reared in Dublin, Ireland, and came to this country in 1898 when he was 16. He lived in the south of Market area of San Francisco until his home was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake.

During his early years in the Bay Area, he worked in the Merchant Marine, reaching the rank of chief engineer.

After spending five years in Alaska and a tour of duty with the Navy during World War I, Archbold went to work for the San Francisco Fire Department. He left in 1942 after nearly 26 years. During World War II, he joined the Maritime Commission testing ships. Following the war, he retired. He moved from San Francisco to Marin in 1968.

He is survived by two sons, Mark J. Archbold Jr. of San Rafael and Robert Archbold of Castro Valley, and two daughters, Marian Archbold of San Rafael and Elizabeth Toohey of San Francisco.

He is also survived by five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A Mass of Christiam Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at the Nazareth House, 245 Nova Albion Way, in Terra Linda.

The rosary will be recited Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Nazareth House. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Nazareth House.
