Was It Suicide?
Dead Body of Charles B. Wilcox Found in Room

Whisky and carbolic acid was found in a bottle by the side of the dead body of Charles B. Wilcox, the bricklayer, at about noon on Wednesday, and the question now is, did he commit suicide intentionally of did he drink the mixture by mistake?

Wilcox had been drinking for several days and had not been at home for 2 days. The last seen of him was at 8 o’clock on Tuesday morning, until he was discovered in a room over the saloon formerly owned by James Begley on the corner of Third and B streets, about noon yesterday. But little is known about the circumstances as yet, and probably will not be known until Coroner Sawyer holds the inquest.

Wilcox was a bricklayer, aged about 67 years, and leaves a wife.

Several years ago Wilcox was a prominent contractor and politician at San Jose. In a drunken row he killed a man and was given a life sentence at San Quentin. After serving 11 years he was paroled, and later was pardoned. He has been living here for 4 or 5 years.
