Dies in San Quentin After Receiving Pardon
Cornelius J. Crowley of Oakland, under life sentence for murder committed in Riverside County on January, 1904, died in San Quentin on the last Thursday of consumption, just two hours after he had received a pardon from acting Governor Porter.
It was the wish of the young man who was but 25 years of age, and who realized that he had but a short time to live, to die outside the prison walls. His aged father did all in his power to get a pardon and at last his hopes were realized. He came from his home and went to the prison to bring his poor boy away, but what was his grief to find that instead of his son alive, found only what remained, the wasted body, the soul having taken flight but a few hours before he arrived.
The old man was heartbroken and sadly left the prison, after he had seen to the shipping of the remains of his son. He was seen at union Depot by Night Officer Collamore who lent him what aid he could and tried to comfort him in his sorrow. The poor old man was so heartbroken, that he staggered about and hardly knew what he said and did. The kind officer helped him by kind words and assisted him aboard the train, after seeing that he was able to travel alone.
