Dr. DONALD R. NELSON
A private funeral has been held for Dr. Donald Roswell Nelson of Larkspur, a retired San Francisco physician.
Nelson died Sunday at a local hospital after a lengthy illness. He and his wife, Mildred, had lived in Larkspur since his retirement in 1973.
A native of Cambridge, Mass., Nelson was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and the University of Cincinnati Medical School. He served his residency at the Cornell Medical Center.
Dr. Nelson maintained an obstetrics-gynecology practice in San Francisco for many years and was a clinical professor at the University of California Medical School.
He was also a retired Navy captain and was attached to the Marine Corps 2nd Division during World War II. He received a Purple Heart and Legion of Merit Award for his service at Guadalcanal and Tarawa.
Nelson was a past president of the San Francisco Gynecological Society, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
He was also a member of the American Medical Association, California Medical Association and Pacific Coast Gynecology Society.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Persis Kain of Tucson; a brother, Eric Nelson of Massillon, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
The family prefers that contributions be made to charity.

A Death Notice in the same paper adds that he was the grandfather of Donald, John and Mary Kain of Tucson, Ariz.
