Former Marin Man Dies in Sonoma

From Petaluma Argus
Carlyle Smith Miller, one of Petaluma’s pioneer residents, died at his home in Vallejo township Friday morning, after a couple of months’ illness with paralysis. Deceased was four score years of age, and up till a short time ago was as active and bright as a man many years his junior. Mr. Miller was born in Pennsylvania, February 10, 1828, and was almost eighty years of age. In 1933 deceased moved to Michigan with his parents. His father traded with the Indians, and after a short stay in Michigan the family moved to Iowa, after the Blackhawk war, and thence to Illinois, and finally in 1847 they migrated to Oregon. In 1849 Mr. Miller accompanied his parents to California, and settled at the head of the Sacramento, where they stayed for about three weeks, and they then came to Sonoma county. Mr. Miller’s father died here in 1859.

C. S. Miller remained with his parents until he was twenty-one years old, when he went to the mines in Nevada City; from there to the mines at South Yuba and followed this occupation for nineteen months. He then came to Sonoma county and purchased a farm near Sebastopol, where he farmed a while and then sold out and went to dealing in cattle, driving them to the mines. After this he engaged in the logging business in Mendocino county, hauling logs from the mountains down to the saw mills.

In 1860 he moved to Marin county and bought a farm of four hundred acres. He has since made additions to it and had six hundred acres. He recently disposed of the ranch. In October 1870 he purchased his present place consisting of one hundred and fifty six acres near Petaluma, in Vallejo township, and came here to reside. In 1882 he bought a ranch in Napa county of four hundred and twelve acres.

In 1857 he returned to the east and was married in Illinois to Sarah Fairley, coming back to California the same year, making what he called their wedding tour overland, being five months on the way. The couple had a large family of children.

Mrs. Miller died about two years ago. The following children survive the father: Charles S. and John J. Miller of Caneros Creek, Napa county; Mrs. Rosana Shiach of Bellevue, Washington; Mrs. Lizzie J. Rodehaver and Mrs. Etta Gutermute of Petaluma; George C. and Hugh Miller of Suisun. He also left nine grandchildren, and a brother, “Papa” Lias Miller of Stewart’s Point, who is one hundred and one years old. The deceased was a remarkable old gentleman and was a great worker. Despite his age he was active and attended to his large business interests in this city and elsewhere. Mr. Miller owned a block on Main and Washington streets, also other business and residence property.

The funeral took place on Sunday at 2:30 o‘clock from the home in Vallejo township. Rev. Luther Davis officiated and the pioneer was tenderly laid to rest in Cypress Hill Cemetery beside his wife.
