Respected Pioneer Passes Away
George W. Towle passed away at his home on Mission Avenue yesterday after an illness of a week from pneumonia.
Through his death, San Rafael loses one of its most highly respected citizens, and the legal profession, one of its leading members.
Mr. Towle came to San Rafael in 1876. Within a short time, he was elected to the position of District Attorney of Marin County. Later he served as City Attorney of San Rafael. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, having served in the Civil War with Co. A., 2nd Mass. Infantry, as a sergeant.
Since his retirement from public office in Marin County, he had practiced law continuously in San Francisco, and was for many years the legal advisor for the Pacific Coast Steamship Co.
Mr. Towle had been one of the foremost figures for the betterment of San Rafael, and had taken a keen interest in all public affairs.
Mrs. Towle passed away several years ago, leaving her husband and one daughter, Miss Kate Caroline Towle, who survives her father.
Mr. Towle and his daughter numbered among their closest friends, many of the most highly respected families in Marin County. The deceased was 78 years of age and was born in Maine.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, with burial arrangements under the direction of the F. E. Sawyer Co.
