Former Resident Passes Away
John W. Barney Dies Suddenly in San Francisco

John W. Barney, a resident of San Rafael during the late fifties, died suddenly on August 9th, last in San Francisco from an attack of heart failure.

Mr. Barney was a native of Liberty, Maryland, being born there April 1837. He was a descendant of a very old American family, many of t he members of which took an active part in the War of American Independence in 1776, and in the War of 1812. They were also a race of hardy pioneers, his father coming to California in 1849, and during his life was prominent in early California affairs. Our oldest residents will remember the latter as County Judge of Marin County. Judge Barney’s family followed him in 1852 and 1855. His son Jerome founded the Marin County Journal, the oldest newspaper in the county. His youngest son, Charles S. Barney, our fellow townsman has been in business here for many years.

The deceased John W. Barney, later returned east and at the breaking out of Civil War enlisted as a hospital steward. He served the colors faithfully for 30 years, and according to Army regulations was retired in 1890, in which year he returned to California. The value of his services in the Medical Supply Department of the Army were so much appreciated that he was shortly afterwards employed by the officer in command in San Francisco in a civilian capacity and remained in the same position up to the time of his death.

He leaves a brother Charles S. Barney, a sister, Annie M. Spiller, a nephew C. R. Barney, and a niece, Miss Bernice (Barney) Holmes.
