WILLIAM A. RAINEY Jr.

William A. Rainey Jr. of San Rafael, a Marin resident for almost 30 years, died today at a local hospital following a lengthy illness. He was 78.

He was born in San Francisco and grew up there, attending local schools.

He was head of the William A. Rainey and Son Construction Co. in San Francisco, a business started by his father in 1901. He lived in San Francisco until 27 years ago when he moved to Marin.

He was past president of the Tyee Club, a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, the Shriners and the San Francisco Rotary Club.

His firm was involved in the construction of the Olympic Club, the Shriner hospitals and the Jack Tar Hotel along with numerous other projects. His partner in the business was Douglas Rainey McMurty of Tiburon, his nephew.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Mitchell Rainey; a son, William A. Rainey III; a sister, Ida Rainey Hecker of Burlingame; and two grandchildren.

The family prefers memorial donations be sent to the Shriner’s Hospital in San Francisco.

No funeral services will be held.
