Late A. Crawford Greene Remembers Many In Will

Attorney A. Crawford Greene Sr., 81, of Ross, left $138,750 to numerous persons and institutions, his last will filed yesterday in Marin Superior Court revealed.

The cash gifts include $5,000 to the Town of Ross in “recognition of the happiness Ross Valley has brought to me and mine.”

Greene, who died Dec. 13 in his home at 1 Shady Lane, left two-thirds of his estate to be divided evenly among his five children, James Coffin Greene of Pasadena, Natalie Greene Lewis, A. Crawford Greene Jr. and Anne Greene Stine of Ross, and Sheila Greene Peck of Kentfield.

According to the 32-page will, made Oct. 19, 1962, his wife, Natalie Greene, was to have received the bulk of the estate in a trust fund. With her death last February, however, the will reverted to the alternative terms.

In addition to the two-thirds share to the five children, each is to receive $15,000 from the remaining third of the estate. Seventeen grandchildren receive $1,000 each, with grandsons Stephen Crawford Lewis and A. Crawford Greene III, both of Ross, to get an extra $5,000 each.

An acquaintance, Arthur L. Brown of Colorado receives $1,000; $250 goes to each of seven other friends; $2,000 goes to Juliet C. Doyle, wife of a friend of Greene’s in Berkeley, and $5,000 goes to Greene’s former secretary, Nelle C. Young of Burlingame.

He left $2,000 to his friend and chauffeur, George Hallerick of Corte Madera; $5,000 to Yale University, $500 to Harvard Law School, and $2,000 to Classical High School in Providence, R.I., as a memorial fund for outstanding students in honor of Greene’s mother, Anne Aylsworth Greene.

The will leaves $5,000 total to Greene’s former law partners, Morris M. Doyle of Berkeley and Robert M. Brown of Hillsborough; $1,000 each to Mills College in Oakland, San Francisco Community Chest in San Francisco, Thatcher School at Ojai, Ventura County, and Katherine Branson School in Ross.

St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ross receives $2,500. Lagunitas Country Club in Ross gets $1,000.

Greene, a full partner in the McCutchen law firm in San Francisco until his retirement six years ago, named his sons James Coffin Greene and A. Crawford Greene Jr. and the former partner Doyle as executors of his estate.

Hearing of their petition for admitting the will to probate is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Jan. 3 before Judge Harold J. Haley of Marin Superior Court.
