According to an 1893 article, the Acme Athletic Club was formed in 1883 in Oakland. I'm not familiar with all the historical agencies over there, but you might start with the History Center of the Oakland public library.

As a side note, there was an "Acme club" in San Francisco according to an 1913 article. It stated that it members were "made up of attaches of the leading hotels..."
