Well, this is actually from a newspaper source:
"The teams of the California Amateur League have been made up, and with the exception of Vallejo, are as follows...E.T. Allens--McDonald picture, Allen catcher, Evatt, Riley and Lewis on the bases, Stanley shortstop, McCarthy left field, Murdock center field, Triton right field, Geishaker extra." Source: San Francisco Examiner, 17 March 1890, page 3.
The E.T. Allens were probably supported by the owner and company, if they were actually employees:
"Allen, Edward T., manufacturer's agent hardware, cutlery and firearms, 416 Market, r. 2204 Jackson." Source: San Francisco City Directory, 1890.
