Yes, in the '40's use of their suits was mandatory (dark grey or black with a little metal buckle) along with showers before AND after swimming -- I believe we had to rent the suits for 15 cents or some other nominal fee (must have covered laundering and the locker room attendant.) If I remember correctly this charge was on top of the quarter (or was it fifty cents??)admission for swimming. Car fare was 7 cents (we could use tokens) and then later 10 cents using our "car tickets".

Hiking up the endless staircases to the street level was a chore after an afternoon of swimming -- of course Sutro's had lots of games and nickel machines you could play on each of the landings for a breather!

We used to skate there as well -- we always thought the ice at Sutro's was better than the ice at 48th Avenue -- I believe it was colder, therefore better and faster for skaters.
