I started to write it's hard to decide between playing in the sanddunes near Lake Merced school which were always covered in poppies and blue lupine, and watching the fishing boats unload their catch down at Fisherman's Wharf, but the Wharf wins hands down. I loved watching the men at work, and the smell of the air comes back when I think of those days. That was back in the 40s and we lived at Park Merced when it was officers' quarters for the Navy. I started kindergarten there at age 4.
