This is a tough one... we had so many "hidden" places along the water... lots of old creeks that are now underground, hidden beaches, flooded backyards!!

When I think back to my favorite childhood place along the ocean, it was always at Sutro's Baths. I loved the museum (especially the frightening mummies), the toothpick amusement park & that short little tram ride out to the cliff. I remember the night of the fire and how we all were told to stay away but who could? We drove from the Excelsior district all the way out to the beach just to witness the end.

As the years passed, I still spent time there and frequently I'd find an old piece of something... glass or metal... or hear in my mind the haunting sound of a nickelodeon. It was a place to return to, whether "necking" in the upper parking lot with a high school boyfriend or sitting on the cliffs on the morning of my daughter's day-long surgery.

I really do miss the old city.
