Our favorite spot in san francisco was a bit eclectic, common, but very special.

It was near the pier, wharf, not too far from all the shrimp cocktails and lobster places.

It was called Cafe San Remo.

It was filled with long tables, picnic style, with table cloths. There were benches to sit on. there was a huge no. of people and as I recall it was pretty much family style.

the last time I remember eating there it was $6.95 a person which seemed a fortune, but the food was extraordinary.

The crowd from collegiate to old fogies was very friendly, getting along well with one another. There were a substantial no. of tourists, and we all ate together.

There were all the dishes mom used to serve on holidays, salad, side dishes of delicious vegetables, bread of several kinds, fresh, with plenty of butter, and lamb or beef as I best recall.

I remember I went away thinking I had gone to a very special feast.

And the water glasses--were those 1948 postwar tumblers with the little scallop all around the bottom edge. If you dropped one they were so strong they would bounce.

Desert was cherry pie, a generous piece with lots of vanilla ice cream.

Very special indeed. San remo was one of a kind.
