I remember that everything west of 19th Avenue was sand dunes. We would have picnics and bonfires on the beach. We would sail out on the bay. The Bridge didn't exist until 1930's and only the top was for cars, the bottom was for trains and trucks, one lane, each direction for each. Before that we'd take 101 to get out of the City.
