SAN FRANCISCO ITEMS 1878 + deaths

There are 55,899 school children in San Francisco County.

Captain J. J. WALWORTH is building a floating bath at North Beach.

San Francisco’s new City Hall, when completed, will cost about $5,000,000.

The big ship Three Brothers is at the Vallejo Street Wharf, loading for New York.

A. H. MANSON, a contractor, committed suicide in his room at the Brooklyn Hotel last week.

Twenty-one horses have been killed within the last two months, being affected with the glanders.

There were 67 deaths last week, 41 males and 26 females. A healthy showing for a city of 320,000 inhabitants.

JOSEPH BUSHER committed suicide by hanging, in the home of the INERETS, one day last week. He leaves a wife and 13 children.

A young trout, one and a half inches long, was drawn alive from the water faucet at the residence of Charles CHERWELL last week.

One night of last week, for the first time in 15 years, no arrests were made between twelve o’clock at night and six in the morning.

Facts were elicited at the Coroner’s inquest, last week that Captain GRAHAM did not kill the hoodlum McCARTHY, that death was caused by his falling and striking his head upon the pavement.

41 first-class theaters are now running in this city. The Standard Theater, formerly Emerson’s Opera House, is undergoing repairs, and its doors will be thrown open to the public in a few days.

There are now in this port under engagement to load 58 vessels, representing 78,755 tons of tonnage, with a carrying capacity of 2,200,000 centals. An average of two vessels a day are being cleared.

Ex-Supervisor KELLEY shot JOHN RUSSELL last week. Family affairs was the cause. Shots were exchanged by both partners. RUSSELL in not dangerously injured. KELLEY was arrested, and is out under $10,000 bonds.

A young girl, Adiline GIELINGEN, who died so suddenly and mysteriously a few days ago, appears to have been poisoned. An autopsy upon the body has demonstrated the fact that she cam to her death by strychnine.

William BAKER, was arrested last week for the shooting of Miss Adeline GRAY, a young Miss of 13-1/2 years of age. A refusal of marriage was his excuse. He says that he intended to put an end to his own existence, which he attempted, but was unluckily prevented by the outsiders. The girl is rapidly recovering.

A notorious bunke sharp “Boston Charley” has preached on a rival gang, giving a modus operandi of its workings, and the manner in which they dispose of their victims. He accuses Chief of Police KIRPATRICK and Detective Dan COFFEY, of being subsidized by them.

The Great Republic reached here last week from Astoria, Oregon, with 500 passengers and 3000 tons of wheat, wool, salmon and other freight, being the largest and most valuable cargo ever shipped from Oregon.

A three-million brick contract was let last week for the new City Hall. They are to be made by white labor.

The cost of running the city government for the fiscal years of 1877-78 amounted to $4,121,381.86
