"A well known San Francisco gambler, Henry LEDERER, met his death in a violent and mysterious manner. A police officer heard a pistol shot about midnight, and saw LEDERER fall from a third story window. A few seconds afterward a light was extinguished in the room, and a carriage was driven rapidly away from the house. An unaddressed love letter in German was in LEDERER's room."
