Thomas Alfred Renner

Thomas Alfred Renner, an 11-year resident of Half Moon Bay, died May 16 at Mills-Peninsula Hospital in Burlingame, at age 77 and following a brief illness.

Mr. Renner was born and raised in Clairton, Pa., and graduated from the Clairton Business School. During World War II he served for two years in the Navy in the Pacific theater, working in stores and supplies. Following his military service, he lived in Easton, Pa., and married Jennifer Concare. They had three sons and later divorced.

In Pennsylvania, Mr. Renner held several diverse jobs, some simultaneously. Among them, he worked for a local railroad and at a local restaurant.

"He was constantly working," said William C. Moore of Half Moon Bay, Mr. Renner's partner of 40 years.

Mr. Renner lived in Miami, Fla. for about three years and then moved to Los Angeles, where he worked in sales and as a technician for an office-machines company. He also lived in New Orleans, where he worked in marketing administration for Kalvar Corporation, which manufactured microfiche film.

In 1982 he came to California and settled in San Francisco, where Mr. Renner worked as an administrative assistant in the pediatrics department at then-Mount Zion Hospital. When the hospital was bought by the University of California, San Francisco, he continued working for UCSF as an administrative assistant in the prenatal department.

Upon his retirement in 1995, he and Moore came to the Coastside and settled in Half Moon Bay.

Moore described Mr. Renner as a jokester with a social side, who loved to tell jokes and give dinner parties,

"He was full of laughter. Always happy," said Moore. "He loved to be around people who enjoyed laughter. He loved to have people in, have a glass of wine and talk."

Mr. Renner also loved to travel. He loved visiting Europe, video camera in hand. He had been to Frankfurt, Venice, London and Paris. "We loved Paris," Moore said. "We had a good life."

Mr. Renner is preceded in death by his son Wayne Thomas Renner, who died Dec. 30, 1998. He is survived by his partner of 40 years, William C. Moore of Half Moon Bay, his sons Gregory Renner of Watertown, N.Y., and Jeffrey Renner of High Point, N.C., by grandchildren Kelly Jean, Nichole, Aimee, Shaun, Julianna and Jonathan Renner, and by great-grandchildren. He is also survived by daughter-in-law Jane Renner of Rockledge, Fla., great-grandchildren and his sister, Edith Lanham, of Little Rock, Ark.

Mr. Renner had requested no services, and to be cremated with his ashes scattered at sea.
