Michael Sterling Porter

El Granada resident Michael Sterling Porter died Sept. 25 at his home, due to a sudden illness. He was 52.

Mr. Porter was born May 10, 1954, in Royal Oak, Mich., to June and Ivan Porter. He trained in the culinary arts at Le Cordon Bleu, and came to Half Moon Bay in the early 1980s, where he worked as a chef.

On the Coastside, he was a member of Mariner's Community Church and of several local recovery communities.

"Mike will long be remembered for his incredible sense of humor and wit, and he was a great chef," said Maureen Murphy, a friend of Mr. Porter's family. "He was beloved by his family and friends and will be much missed."

Mr. Porter is preceded in death by his father, Ivan Porter, and his sister, Dr. Kim Porter, who died in 2005.

He is survived by his wife, Kim Porter, and sons Jonathan and Justin Porter, all of Half Moon Bay, and mother June Porter of Florida.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 8, at Mariner's Community Church at 225 S. Cabrillo Highway in Half Moon Bay. All are welcome.
