John Duer Luetscher

John Duer Luetscher, a 35-year resident of the La Honda area, died March 11 at his La Honda home, following a brief illness. He was 70.

Born in Baltimore, Mr. Luetscher moved to California in 1948 with his parents. He graduated from Lowell High School in San Francisco, and attended Stanford University and San Jose State University.

Mr. Luetscher served for two years in the Army and, when the Santa Clara Valley transformed itself into Silicon Valley, entered the high-tech industry. He worked first at the Shockley company, founded by William Shockley, and then worked for many years in the seismic department of the U.S. Geological Survey office in Menlo Park.

"John was always there to help a friend or neighbor," said his brother, Buck Luetscher. "He loved the redwoods and made many friends in the greater La Honda area."

Mr. Luetscher was preceded in death by his parents, John and Genevieve Luetscher. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Buck and Sue Luetscher, of Sacramento, and two nieces in Southern California.

No formal services are scheduled. A celebration of Mr. Luetscher's life will be held in mid-June on the Coastside.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
