Paula B. Kleinfeld, who lived on the Coastside off and on for 25 years, died Sept. 29 at her home at age 82.

Mrs. Kleinfeld was born in Lynchburg, Va., where she grew up and attended Sweetbriar College. In 1943 she married her husband, Immanuel Kleinfeld, and started a family five years later; the couple divorced 20 years later.

In 1952 her husband's work took the growing family to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, for seven years. In 1959, Mrs. Kleinfeld returned to Virginia and pursued finishing college. She graduated from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., in 1964 with a bachelor's degree in English, and followed it with a master's degree in the same field at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.

She taught English as a Second Language for many years, in Virginia, Mexico and Half Moon Bay after coming to the Coastside in the mid-1970s. She lived in El Granada for five years, then returned to Mexico to care for her ailing father. She returned to Half Moon Bay in 1990 and stayed.

She was an active member of the community at the Lesley Gardens senior housing facility in Half Moon Bay. She also did volunteer work with local seniors and taught Spanish in Half Moon Bay.

"She will be remembered fondly for her gentle spirit, her love of literature and kind heart," said her son, Abe Kleinfeld of Santa Rosa.

Mrs. Kleinfeld is preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine Levy.

She is survived by her children Abe Kleinfeld of Santa Rosa, Anita Weir of Los Angeles and Cindy Kleinfeld of Redwood City, and grandchildren Elbert Jarvis of Virginia, Rachel Weir of Los Angeles and Erin, Halina and Zack Kleinfeld of Santa Rosa.

Mrs. Kleinfeld had requested that no funeral services be held. Her family held a private memorial service.
