Martha June Smith Hadland

Martha June (nee Smith) Hadland, a 22-year Coastside resident, died May 7 due to endometrial cancer at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene, Ore. She was 68.

Mrs. Hadland was born Nov. 1, 1937 in Pasadena, where her parents, Preston Allen and Ellen Grace Carpenter Smith, had moved from Pennsylvania.

She spent a carefree childhood in the large old family home with four older siblings in Altadena, and graduated from Pasadena City College and Long Beach State College. She taught elementary school before and following her marriage to Wayne O. Hadland in 1962; they remained married for 44 years and raised three daughters.

The family lived in the Evergreen area of San Jose from 1965 to 1978, when they came to the Coastside. From 1978 to 1999 they lived between Moss Beach and Montara, spending their happiest years there together within sight of the ocean, at the end of June Hollow Road which memorializes Mrs. Hadland and her three daughters, all of whom share the middle name of June.

In 1999, after Wayne Hadland retired from the Department of the Navy, the Hadlands sold their Coastside home and moved to the outskirts of Sweet Home, Ore.

Mrs. Hadland is survived by her husband, Wayne, of Sweet Home, Ore., their daughters Taina June Rett of San Jose, Gretel June Colvert of Palo Alto and Katrina June Hadland of Lebanon, by three grandchildren and her four siblings.

She had requested cremation, and her ashes will be scattered at sea.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society.
