Mary "Betsy" Day

Mary "Betsy" Day, a 10-year El Granada resident, died Sept. 26 at her home, at age 87.

Mrs. Day was born in Sacramento on Dec. 20, 1918. Her family moved frequently and she grew up in Texas, Sacramento and San Francisco. She married George Day on Dec. 7, 1949, and they settled in Pacifica.

"She was passionate, hard-working, very creative, very brilliant," said Mrs. Day's grandson, Sonny Day of El Granada. "Very outgoing, a great sense of humor, very generous. A social-butterfly type of person."

Mrs. Day was an entrepreneur, who founded the Pacifica Playschool in the late 1950s, a day-care facility for young children. She served as the director of two Pacifica Playschool centers until retiring in 1990.

"She was wonderful with children - very patient," said Sonny Day's wife, Emily, of El Granada. "She just adored the children."

She also liked to paint, said her grandson, and loved the ocean and collecting shells.

After retirement, Mrs. Day focused on her family and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Day is preceded in death by her husband of 11 years, George Day, who died in 1960, and by a son, James Day.

She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Wheeler of Sacramento, grandchildren Trey Wheeler of Sacramento, Suzanne Wheeler of Pacifica, Sonny Day and wife Emily Day of El Granada and Daniel Day of Colorado.

She is also survived by great-grandchildren Austin, Morgan and Ethan Day of El Granada, Logan and Whitney Wheeler of Sacramento, Alyssa and Andrea of Pacifica and Desiree of Colorado.

Mrs. Day had requested to be cremated. Services were held Monday at the Chapel By the Sea in Pacifica.
