John S. Costa, a Half Moon Bay resident for more than 40 years, died Aug. 24 at Seton Medical Center Coastside. He was 94.

Mr. Costa was a native of Terceira in the Azores Islands. He came to the United States with his family in 1963, and several months later, settled in Half Moon Bay.

Mr. Costa was a nursery worker for about 25 years, at then Pastorino-Repetto nursery and at Bay City Flowers. After that, he worked as a stationary engineer in San Mateo, retiring at age 65.

He loved working in his garden, and also loved fishing, said his son, Joseph L. Costa of Redwood City, who went on to describe his father as "warm, caring, church-going. He always had a smile and a handshake. He was well-known throughout the town, and will be missed by all."

Mr. Costa is preceded in death by his siblings Joe Costa, Franklin Costa, Mateo Costa, Maria Angelica Silva and Guteria Silva.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Georgina Costa of Half Moon Bay, his son and daughter-in-law Joseph L. and Debbie Costa of Redwood City, and grandchildren Matthew Joseph Costa and Jennifer Nicole Costa, both of Redwood City.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Monday, Aug. 28, at Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church in Half Moon Bay, followed by interment at Our Lady of the Pillar Cemetery.
