Glen Newton Bale

Glen Newton Bale, a 38-year resident of Half Moon Bay, died Aug. 15 at the Veterans Hospital in Palo Alto. He was 83.

Mr. Bale was born at Mills Hospital in San Mateo, and attended school there before moving to Manteca, where he graduated from high school in June, 1941.

A month after graduation, he joined the Navy. He went on to serve with the Navy in both World War II and the Korean War, completing his service in 1954, according to his wife, Elizabeth Bale of Half Moon Bay.

While in the service, Mr. Bale became a medical technologist, receiving his medical education at the Bethesda Naval Hospital Medical School in Bethesda, Md. For 27 years, he was a member of the San Mateo Police Department, and also worked as a medical technologist, permanently on a part-time basis, at Chope Hospital in San Mateo.

Mr. Bale was briefly a member of the San Mateo Elks Club, and was also a member of the Peninsula Peace Officers Association and the Manteca Historical Association.

Mr. Bale is preceded in death by a daughter, Noreen Simmons, who died in 1983.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth, of Half Moon Bay, his daughters Virginia Bale of Berkeley and Glenna Bailey of Oregon and son Norman Bale of Tulare, Calif. He is also survived by grandchildren Catherine Voice and husband Daniel of Albany, N.Y., Jocelyn Bale-Glickman and husband Michael Dillon of Berkeley, and Alex Bale-Glickman of Oakland, and great-granddaughter Gwendolyn Dillon.

It was Mr. Bale's wish that there be no funeral or other services.
