3-Year-Old is Killed

A three-year-old Broadmoor boy was killed Sunday afternoon when he chased a ball into the street in front of his home and ran into the path of a car.

Mark Torres, the twin son of Mr. and Mrs. David Torres, 767 Thorn hill Drive, became the first traffic fatality in the Broadmoor Village residential tract.

He was dead of arrival at Kaiser Foundation Hospital in South San Francisco.

The driver of the car, Mrs. Ethel June Stoddard, 40, of 411 Linden Avenue, San Bruno, told the highway patrol that she had slammed on the brakes as soon she saw the boy dart out. She could not stop in time, however.

Scott Caldwell, 12, of 807 Thornhill, was playing catch with Mark when the ball went into the street. When he saw the three-year-old running out into the street, he shouted a warning.

Mark hesitated slightly then darted into the street from behind a parked car.

The driver was not cited.

Broadmoor Police Chief Ray Savage, in explaining details of the accident noted a tragic sidelight of the incident. A radio station which pay a cash bonus for “new tips” was informed of the accident by one of the on-lookers.

The station broadcast the information and it was heard over the radio by the dead boy’s grandmother before any member of the family could tell her.
