Civic Leader Collapses, Dies

George Argiris, prominent in South San Francisco’s political picture and a member of the West Bay Rapid Transit Authority, collapsed and died while attending a city council study meeting Thursday night.

Argiris, 51, who in 1962 was “brought back to life” by open heart massage, responded in inhalator treatment given by the fire department at the council chambers but he succumbed shortly after entering Peninsula Hospital.

He was attending a study meeting between the city council and residents protesting the establishment of the Westborough expressway extension.

The meeting had been in progress about an hour when Argiris collapsed in his seat near the entrance to the chambers. Police arrive and began heart massage and then the fire department performed resuscitation.

A resident of 116 Ravenwood drive, Argiris was employed as owner-relations manager for the Cadillac Motor Car division. He is survived by his wife, Tula, and children, Cynthia, Michael and George.

Services will be conducted Tuesday evening at 7:30 from the Chapel of Nauman and Lincoln Mortuary, 322 Maple avenue. Interment will be at Golden Gate National Cemetery with graveside services at 9:15 Wednesday morning.

Besides being a member of the West Bay Rapid Transit Authority, Argiris was a former member of the Grand Jury and a retired Captain in the Army Reserve. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the South San Francisco Rod & Gun Club.
